Winter weather ends in SC; power outages endure
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Utility crews have managed to restore power for thousands of people in South Carolina, but 295,000 customers were facing another night in the dark.
Problems remained in rural areas served by the Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina. Officials said 144,000 of their customers were without power, a number that rose slightly during the day Thursday.
South Carolina Electric & Gas officials said Thursday evening it had about 90,000 outages remaining, with 36,000 in hard-hit Aiken. Duke Energy reported about 60,000 customers without service with Florence and Sumter hardest hit.
Utility officials say it could be next week before everyone has power again.
Temperatures rose above freezing Thursday, but a refreeze was expected as lows should dip below 32 degrees.
