WESTMINSTER, S.C. (AP) -- A former police chief in Westminster has been charged with embezzling more than $100,000 from the Oconee County town.
The State Law Enforcement Division says 45-year-old Johnny Scott Bannister was arrested Monday and charged with embezzlement, forgery and misconduct in office.
SLED says Bannister took the money between January 2009 and July 2012. Authorities say Bannister also forged a check in 2010.
If convicted in all counts, Bannister could face up to 16 years in prison.
Bannister was being held Monday in the Oconee County jail. It wasn't known if he had an attorney.
