CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- It's shrimping season again.

Shrimping opens in federal waters three miles off the South Carolina coast Thursday.

There is concern among shrimpers that this year will continue the trend of poor harvests in recent years. For the past three years the catch has been below normal.

Some shrimpers say they're not going to power up their boats and use up fuel to head offshore this early in the season. They are going to wait until the state waters closer to the shore open. That opening could be in a month or so.

The Department of Natural Resources has been making test trawls and plans to ride with a shrimper offshore to check the crop. Then there will be a decision on when to open state waters to shrimping.
