Symphony locks out musicians amid labor dispute

Thursday, Sept. 5, 2012

ATLANTA (AP) -- The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's upcoming season could be in jeopardy amid an ongoing labor conflict between the organization and its musicians.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the symphony has now stopped paying its musicians and the Woodruff Arts Center has locked them out of the symphony facilities.

Representatives from both sides said this week that a dispute over $1.2 million in payments to musicians is what stands in the way of a new, two-year contract between the symphony and its 93 musicians.

The previous contract between the orchestra and the Atlanta Federation of Musicians expired Aug. 25.

The symphony's season is scheduled to open on Oct. 4.
