ATLANTA (AP) -- A northwest Georgia coroner has confirmed a man was killed in a severe thunderstorm that left tens of thousands of people without power a day later.

Polk County Coroner Trey Litesey confirmed that James Larry Agan died after a falling tree landed on his truck during a thunderstorm Monday evening. Authorities are unsure of Agan's age.

The storm brought high winds and pelted some areas with hail the size of golf balls. Georgia Power officials said 73,000 customers lost power Monday night and about 21,700 were still without service Tuesday afternoon.

As power was still being restored across Georgia Tuesday, Polk County had the highest number of outages statewide, followed by Floyd County, Georgia Power reported. Baldwin, Bibb and Jones counties also had significant numbers of outages, utility officials said.

ATLANTA (AP) -- The National Weather Service has issued severe thunderstorm warnings throughout the state, and forecasters say the weather system brought rain, hail, and heavy winds with it.

Meteorologists issued tornado warnings for parts of north Georgia -- including metro Atlanta -- and severe thunderstorm warnings for other areas throughout the state Monday afternoon.

The storm is part of a system that moved across Alabama earlier Monday and hammered areas of the state with high winds, quarter-sized hail and heavy rain.

National Weather Service meteorologists in Peachtree City say thunderstorms are expected to increase in strength throughout the afternoon and pose a threat for damaging winds.

Forecasters say they expect severe thunderstorm watches to extend to most counties in central and southern Georgia as the system moved deeper into the state.
