LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) -- The first major structural change to a controversial system of toll lanes on a metro Atlanta interstate was to get its first test this week.

WSB Radio reports that a new access point opened over the weekend, giving drivers a new way to enter the so-called HOT lanes on Interstate 85.

The special lanes on I-85 in parts of Gwinnett and DeKalb counties have prompted criticism from some motorists, who say it led to more congestion. In response, state officials have considered several changes, including the new access point.

Georgia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Teri Pope tells WSB-TV the new access point will begin just south of the Georgia 120 bridge over I-85.
