SCE&G working to repair cracks at nuclear plant

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Engineers are working to seal cracks at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station in Fairfield County.

The State newspaper reported the Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the fractures at the South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. plant do not now represent a threat to the public.

SCE&G has told the NRC the utility's repair plans will satisfy concerns about the cracks at the plant in Jenkinsville. SCE&G says the repairs should be good for at least 40 years.

Columbia anti-nuclear activist Tom Clements says the company should put a new dome on the building, rather than simply sealing the cracks. David Lochbaum with the Union of Concerned Scientists says that could cost $40 million or more.

SCE&G spokeswoman Rhoda O'Banion says the company is ensuring there will be no future problems.
