FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) -- A 24-year-old Florence woman has been sentenced to 27 years in prison after admitting she killed her 3-year-old cousin by pouring pots of scalding water down her pants after she urinated on herself during potty training.

The Morning News of Florence reported that Kesha Grant pleaded guilty Monday to homicide by child abuse.

Prosecutors say the child was developmentally disabled and had cerebral palsy. She died several days after the abuse after the burns became infected and she was not taken for medical help.

The Department of Social Services had placed the girl with her 44-year-old great aunt, Geraldine Brockington. Prosecutors say Brockington also is charged with homicide by child abuse and her case could be resolved later this week.
