SC proposal would let teachers have guns on campus

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Proposed South Carolina legislation would let public school employees with concealed weapons permits carry guns on school grounds.
Rep. Phillip Lowe said Wednesday the state's schools are vulnerable. The Florence Republican says his proposal would make students safer.
School employees could carry guns on the campus where they work. They'd need concealed weapons permits and would be required to be qualified as an expert marksman by state police.
Employees would have to tell school officials about the weapon and have no history of violence.
Twenty children and six adults were killed when a man carrying a military-style rifle stormed a Connecticut elementary school last week. Lowe says the tragedy makes his proposal timely but adds similar legislation was first mulled after the 2007 shootings at Virginia Tech.
