COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Columbia Police say a woman lied about a kidnapping attempt at the University of South Carolina that led to a campus-wide alert.

Authorities say the woman told investigators she was walking about a block from the heart of campus around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday when a man grabbed her arm and demanded she come with him.

The university sent out a campus-wide alert warning of the incident and later sent an alert saying the report was false.

Police didn't release details on why the woman might have made up the story.

Authorities charged 18-year-old Rachel Mosser with filing a false police report -- a felony with a maximum punishment of five years in prison. She was being booked Tuesday evening and it wasn't known if she had a lawyer.
