CLEVELAND (AP) -- Reviews are underway examining how one of Ohio's most notorious prison inmates committed suicide a month into his life sentence.

Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro was able to hang himself with a bedsheet despite his placement in protective custody, which involves checks every 30 minutes.

Ohio prisons director Gary Mohr ordered the reviews Wednesday, less than a day after Castro's death.

The reviews will look at the facts of Castro's suicide and whether he received proper medical and mental health care leading up to it.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio has called for an investigation into Castro's death and whether all inmates are getting the mental health treatment they need.
