No charges for cop who shot pregnant SC woman

Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013

WOODRUFF, S.C. (AP) -- A Woodruff police officer who shot and killed a pregnant woman in October will not be charged.

The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reports that the State Law Enforcement Division has closed its investigation into the shooting death of Lacey Denise Lamb.

The 28-year-old woman died after she was shot during a traffic stop and a man in the car fled on foot. While Officer William T. Knight was chasing the man, authorities say Lamb tried to hit the officer with the car, and he shot her.

Lamb was 21 weeks pregnant. She and her baby died.

Knight was not hurt. Authorities say 33-year-old Matthew Simmons was arrested and charged with driving under suspension and trafficking in methamphetamine.
