NC worker killed at York Co. paper plant

Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013

CATAWBA, S.C. (AP) -- York County officials say a Monroe, N.C., man has died and another has been injured in an accident at a paper plant.

The accident happened around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Resolute Forest Products plant in Catawba.

Authorities say 39-year-old Samir Storey and the other worker climbed into an old tank outside the main production area to do some maintenance work. County emergency management director Cotton Howell says it's possible that some type of chemical leaked into the tank.

The other worker was removed from the tank and is being treated for injuries. His name and condition have not been released.

Howell says no evacuation was necessary.

The plant employs about 700 people and makes commercial printing papers and market pulp.
