TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. -- News 12 has confirmed that the 59-year-old man who drowned off Tybee Island is from Martinez.
Chatham County Deputy Coroner Sara Smith says the victim is Worley Pierson.
From The Associated Press:
Authorities say a man drowned in the ocean off Tybee Island, where he was swimming along a stretch of beach where no lifeguards are stationed.
The Savannah Morning News reports bystanders pulled the middle-aged man from the water Tuesday morning after he called out for help. He was taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center in neighboring Savannah, where he was pronounced dead.
Tybee Island Fire Chief Skip Sasser, who's in charge of lifeguards on the island, says the man who drowned was swimming off a portion of beach that's not manned by lifeguards. The man's name was not immediately released.
Sasser says it was the first drowning reported on Tybee Island's beach this year.
