BELMONT, N.C. (AP) -- Police in North Carolina say all the hostages have been released from a drugstore following an attempted armed robbery.
But the gunman was still in the CVS drugstore in Belmont at 6 a.m. Friday.
Police were called to the store shortly before 2 a.m. Police Chief Charles Franklin says a gunman fired several shots at the first officers to arrive and they returned fire.
A negotiator is in communication with the gunman.
Sgt. John Wilson said the only three hostages in the store were released shortly after 4 a.m. Wilson says there have been no injuries.
Streets in the area have been blocked off. Belmont is about 15 miles west of Charlotte.
