ATLANTA (AP) -- A Roswell man has been sentenced to seven consecutive life sentences plus 270 years in a home invasion robbery and rape.
Tyler Grogan was sentenced Thursday and WSB-TV reports he cursed at Judge Alford Dempsey as he prepared to hand down the punishment.
Grogan was charged in a May 2011 incident in which he held a man and woman hostage in an apartment and repeatedly raped the woman during a standoff with a SWAT team.
Grogan's defense attorney Kenneth Schatten said his client is sorry for what he did and blamed his actions on lingering anger stemming from his mother's murder years ago.
The judge called Grogan an animal.
After the sentencing, the man's supporters cursed at police, prosecutors and reporters who attended the hearing.
