BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) -- A coastal Georgia man has been ordered to appear in court to determine if he's mentally competent to stand trial in the 2008 molestation and slaying of a 6-year-old boy in Brunswick.

Superior Court Judge Stephen Scarlett scheduled a hearing Thursday to determine whether George Edenfield can stand trial or if he should be committed to state mental hospital.

Edenfield has spent nearly two years in court-ordered treatment aimed at restoring his competency so he might face murder and other charges in the death of Christopher Barrios. Prosecutors say Edenfield lured the boy into his family's mobile home and he and his father molested and killed the boy while Edenfield's mother watched.

A mental evaluation in February determined Edenfield still wasn't able to understand court proceedings or assist his attorneys.
