GSU cuts 110 positions to save about $4 million

Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012

ATLANTA (AP) -- Georgia State University has eliminated 110 positions to save about $4 million.

Spokeswoman Andrea Jones tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that 25 of the jobs were filled and none of those jobs were faculty. Jones says they were mostly administrative support positions.

The cuts came after Gov. Nathan Deal ordered nearly all state agencies to cut about 3 percent of their budgets because of the weak economy. Georgia State President Mark Becker wrote in a memo this week that the permanent reduction adds up to a savings of more than $5 million for the school.

The school has also postponed maintenance projects, cut money for travel and left dozens of vacant staff and faculty positions open.

The university previously eliminated 300 jobs in 2009 to save about $9 million.
