Frigid North Ga. temperatures sink into 20s

ATLANTA (AP) -- Temperatures are plunging into the 20s in north Georgia, marking the start of frigid temperatures forecast to kick off of the week.

Before dawn Monday, the National Weather Service reported temperatures of 26 degrees in Rome; 27 degrees in Dalton and 28 degrees in Cartersville.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://bit.ly/19ZyBAV ) that Department of Transportation crews were treating isolated icy patches on state routes in Dade, Murray, Walker, Whitfield, Fannin, Gilmer, Pickens and Floyd counties. Few problems were reported on metro Atlanta roads.

Colder weather is on the way Tuesday, with low temperatures around 8 degrees forecast in metro Atlanta and temperatures as low as 2 degrees in the Blairsville area.

Wind chills Tuesday could drop as low as 30 degrees below zero in higher elevations of the north Georgia mountains.
