AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- News 12 has learned a former chief justice for the Supreme Court of Georgia has died.

Chief Justice Harold G. Clarke served from 1979 to 1994.

Chief Justice Carol W. Hunstein released the following statement:
"Sadly we learned this morning of the death of former Chief Justice Harold G. Clarke, who served with grace and fortitude on the Supreme Court of Georgia from 1979 to 1994. Justice Clarke passed away peacefully last evening with his family by his side.

It was my honor and privilege to serve with this towering figure of a man, who was Chief Justice when I came onto the Supreme Court in 1992. Justice Clarke was not only a great jurist, but he was a quiet, strong leader of principle and the kindest man I have ever known.

On behalf of the Supreme Court of Georgia, all of the justices express our gratitude for his legacy and lifetime of service and purpose, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family."
