DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) -- State agents say a former Darlington fire chief used inmates to wash his car and clean oysters.
The State Law Enforcement Division said 71-year-old James Stone was arrested Friday and charged with misconduct in office.
Authorities say Stone used the inmates to clean up around his home, wash his personal car and clean oysters from January 2009 until June. An arrest warrant says Stone admitted to using the inmate labor for his own personal gain.
It wasn't clear if Stone had an attorney. He resigned earlier this year after 50 years of service with the Darlington Fire Department.
