Eckstrom: SC bases may face budget perfect storm

Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A state official says South Carolina's military communities are facing looming budget pressures that could slice into civilian and military jobs.

Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom warned a meeting Tuesday of the state's military base supporters that a so-called "perfect storm" of budget pressures could merge with future base closures to cut the military's presence in South Carolina.

The Military Base Task Force held its first session of 2013 to assess upcoming budget issues that could affect the state's four major base communities. They also reviewed proposed legislation that could affect military men and women in the state.

Task force members discussed the possibility that federal across-the-board spending cuts to Pentagon and domestic programs could take place as of March 1. The cuts are known as sequestration.
