COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW) -- Officers have confirmed a 26-year-old man drowned on Clarks Hill Lake Sunday afternoon.

According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, he was trying to swim out to a buoy at West Dam when he started to panic and went underwater.

Officers say he was with a group of friends swimming in the roped-off area of the West Dam swimming area.

They do not suspect any alcohol was involved.

Georgia DNR, the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, EMA and Dive Team, plus the Corps of Engineers responded to the scene.

Officers still do not know what caused the man to drown.

This marks the third drowning this weekend.
