WASHINGTON (AP) -- Hillary Rodham Clinton has been given a sendoff at the State Department by a crowd of American foreign service workers, as she ends her four years as secretary of state.

She urged them to continue to "serve the nation we all love," and to understand the challenges, threats and opportunities it faces. Clinton said they should work to see that "America is secure, that our interests are promoted and our values are respected."

In a letter sent to President Barack Obama today, Clinton said she's "more convinced than ever" in the strength of America's global leadership, and in the nation's "capacity to be a force for good in the world." She thanked her former political rival for the opportunity to serve in his administration.

Clinton's resignation takes effect on the swearing-in today of her successor, John Kerry.
