COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A Senate panel has advanced a bill aimed at closing abortion clinics in South Carolina, while a separate panel took testimony on bills making abortion illegal.

A bill placing new restrictions on abortions moved Thursday to the Senate Medical Affairs Committee without a vote. Its chairman wants debate by the full committee.

It's one of several anti-abortion bills sponsored by Sen. Lee Bright, a U.S. Senate candidate from Roebuck who says he'll do anything to restrict what he calls the "culture of death."

Two of Bright's other bills considered Thursday grant legal rights at conception. Supporters told senators that God would destroy South Carolina if they voted against the measure.

Opponents say beyond the bills' constitutional problems, their legal consequences extend beyond abortion, including access to contraception.
