COLUMBIA, SC (AP)-The South Carolina Supreme Court is set to hear arguments on whether autopsy reports are public records under state law.
The justices Wednesday are scheduled to listen to an appeal by a Sumter newspaper whose lawsuit against the Sumter County coroner was thrown out in 2012.
The coroner refused to release the autopsy report of a man shot by police in September 2010 to The Sumter Item. The coroner said the report was a medical record, which can't be released under the state Freedom of Information Act.
The newspaper says autopsy results are investigative records that should be made public. In the police shooting case, the autopsy contradicted information released by authorities.
