ATLANTA (AP) -- A 12-year-old basketball player from Buford who collapsed at a game and died is being remembered by coaches as a great kid.
Coach Byron Larrieu said seventh-grader Jeremy Nelson was pulled from the Gwinnett Basketball League all-star game Saturday night to get some rest and a few seconds later he began having problems. He was rushed to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he died.
Larrieu told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the 6-foot-4 player was "a phenomenal kid with a great sense of humor." Former coach DeMarcus Irons said Nelson represented everything good about kids in the league.
Schools Superintendent Geye Hamby said Nelson was an excellent student athlete at Buford Middle School and had a presence in the hallways and on the court.
