ATLANTA, Ga. -- Georgians are invited to celebrate the state Capitol's 120th anniversary next week at a celebration in the building's rotunda.

The event next Wednesday will include a tour of the Capitol and birthday cake. Attendees can sign a birthday card for Miss Freedom, the statue that tops the building's gold dome.

The Capitol was built between 1884 and 1889 and, like many state capitols, follows design and architectural precedents established by the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Wednesday's celebration will be hosted by the offices of the governor, the lieutenant governor and the secretary of state, as well as the Georgia Capitol Museum and the Friends of the Georgia Archives.
