Train derailed in Jenkins County

A Norfolk Southern freight train derailed about seven miles south of Millen, Georgia at 9:45 this morning.

22 cars went off the track. Fortunately, there were no injuries and no hazardous materials.

The train had 32 cars total.

Norfolk Southern brought in contractors with specialized equipment to put the cars back on the track.

"We were blessed that it was where it was," said Jenkins County Sheriff Tim Fields. "It was just in an unpopulated area. We don't have any state highways or major roadways blocked. I guess if you have to have a derailment, it couldn't have happened in a better place."

The track between Millen and Savannah is closed while the train is rerailed. Any train that needs to go through will be rerouted through Augusta.
