Man dies in wreck in south Augusta

A man is dead after a bad wreck on the south side of Augusta early Monday.

It happened at Hephzibah McBean Road and Peach Orchard Road at around 4 o'clock.

The wreck involved two cars.

38-year-old Frank Johnson was driving south on Peach Orchard Road delivering papers for the Augusta Chronicle when another car going west on Hephzibah-McBean Road ran the stop sign and hit the driver's side door.

Johnson was taken to MCG via medical helicopter, but was later pronounced dead. The cause of death was multiple blunt force trauma.

Hilton Bruce Ward III was driving the car that hit Johnson's car. Ward is charged with running the stop sign, DUI, and vehicular homicide in the first degree.
