Back to school means back to the stores. Shopping for things like backpacks and calculators can get pretty expensive.

News 12's Stephanie Baker caught up with some shoppers today.

Everything kids need for school adds up...that's why the United Way School Tools Drive is collecting donations to help people who can't afford to buy supplies.

Notebooks, markers, backpacks...it all adds up. Especially for one father we met who has four school-age children.

"It will get expensive sooner or later...wait till we get to the end of it," he says.

For some, the list is a little shorter.

"Crayons...she only needed crayons and scissors, and that was it," said another parent.

But buying these things is harder for several thousand low-income families across our area.

"The United Way is collecting for underprivileged kids who can't afford school supplies," says Latrise Simpson, a United Way volunteer we ran into.

Volunteers with the United Way School Tools Drive are handing out supply lists, asking people to make a contribution.

News 12 went through and got everything on the list. The total came to over $50 dollars.

$50 a child adds up. US Census data shows thousands of American families live below the poverty level. Imagine trying to stretch $15,000 a year for a family of four.

Whether you're worried about prices or just fighting the crowds, one thing's for sure: school supplies are a must, and the first day is fast approaching.

The United Way will accept donations through August 11 at the North Augusta and Aiken Wal-Marts, the North Augusta Office Depot, and G Force Cable.

School is about to start, and the supplies fly off the shelf around this time of year.

Things are pretty well stocked right now, but it will all be tax-free the weekend of August 5, and the manager at Target says there won't be a whole lot left after that.
