Richmond County sheriff's investigators have identified several people involved in a shootout that left a woman in the hospital.

News 12 has learned the 18-year-old is now in stable condition.

Investigators say the gas station's surveillance tape and what witnesses are telling them could help break this case.

Two days after a shootout at a south side gas station, investigators have identified and are getting arrest warrants for some people they say are involved.

Sgt. Richard Roundtree says there were 40 to 50 people at the gas station during the shooting, and witness have started to talk.

"The surveillance tapes and eyewitness accounts have been a large reason we have been able to identify as many people we have thus far," he says.

High powered rifles and small caliber guns were used in the shootout.

It ended with about 40 rounds of gunfire and an 18-year-old shot in the back.

"The point of focus now is to identify all participants and to recover as many weapons we can and get these weapons off the street, especially the high powered weapons we did in fact see on the video," Sgt. Roundtree says.

One angle the sheriff's department is looking at is whether the shooting was gang related.

"We are definitely looking at the possibility that it may be gang related," Sgt. Roundtree says. "We have some indication that certain members of the group may be affiliated with some gangs."

And Sgt. Roundtree admits some witnesses don't come forward because they fear retaliation.

"These particular groups associate or 'hang' pretty much in the same circles, so witnesses sometimes have a tendency not to come forward because they see these people on a daily basis."

The goal of the sheriff's office is to prevent the situation from escalating even more.

"Based on the potential for continued violence, we are trying to consolidate all our efforts and resources to capture all parties involved," Sgt. Roundtree says.
