An Aiken murder investigation now spans the country.
Local officers are in on the search for the man they say killed his own mother.
57-year old Craig Baldwin, last seen in Lexington, Kentucky, is wanted for murdering his mother, 83-year old Dale Baldwin.
All appears to be normal on York Street, but look a little closer and you'll see something's wrong...
Newspapers in the driveway and police tape on the door.
"That worries me a bit because I may have gone right by," says Louise Stribling. She and her husband George live close to where police say Dale Baldwin was murdered by her son.
They say Baldwin wrapped her dead body in a sheet and left her to rot in the front yard.
Ms. Baldwin's body was wedged between the house and some bushes. Investigators cut through a pile of debris to reach her.
Police think Baldwin killed his mother around June 16, a week before the body was found.
"Utter shock on my street, you know, three houses away," Louise says.
Based on evidence, Sgt. David Turno and the Office of Public Safety cemented an arrest warrant for Craig Baldwin. Baldwin was last seen at his daughter's wedding in Lexington, Kentucky June 24, just one day after his mother's body was found.
"We have nationally put him in our database for all law enforcement agencies nationwide to be on the lookout for this gentleman and the vehicle that he is driving," says Sgt. Turno.
That vehicle is a blue 2002 Toyota Camry with South Carolina license plate number W66040.
Officials hope a description of it as well as the picture of Baldwin will be enough to track him down.
"The authorities there, as well as the media outlets in Lexington are aware that we have warrants for him and we are looking for him," Sgt. Turno says.
The search has an Aiken neighborhood unusually quiet...and a home on the corner the center of an intense investigation.
Officials are still waiting for Ms. Baldwin's autopsy results. They have not yet determined the cause of her death. That has been tricky because her body was so badly decomposed.
Investigators believe that Baldwin embezzled funds from a bank account belonging to his mother shortly before her death.
The United States Marshals Service is offering a $5,000 reward for any information that would lead to the arrest of Craig Bogert Baldwin.
Baldwin is described as a white male, 5'10", 160 pounds with gray hair and hazel eyes. He is believed to be driving a 2002 light blue Toyota Camry with South Carolina registration W66040.
In announcing the reward, United States Marshal Johnny Mack Brown said, "At this point, Baldwin's behavior is unpredictable. We urge anyone with information regarding Baldwin to call us immediately."
Anyone with information about Baldwin should call the United States Marshals Service at 803-765-5477 or 843-662-0750 or the Aiken Department of Public Safety at 803-642-7620.
