Beaches and barbecues aside, Memorial Day is dedicated to remembering and honoring our nation's heroes.

News 12 is On Your Side with celebrations on both sides of the river, where flags were waving proudly.

It comes every year...each time with more people to remember.

"I'm here every Memorial Day to honor the troops who've died in the service of our country," says Norman Walker, retired from the US Navy.

Pat Taylor's not a veteran, but her husband is and father was. That's why she spent part of her day at the All Wars monument in downtown Augusta.

"I'd like to see, like Major Price said, see this whole street full of people," Taylor said.

Even the little ones were out this Memorial Day.

"To support our veterans because they're in Iraq fighting for our country," said eight-year-old Courtney Strauss.

While they may not understand completely, they're on the right track.

Whether you were in Downtown Augusta or across the river at the Wade Hampton Veterans Park, the observances honored those who've died fighting for our country...touching all of us in some way or another.

"I've got a neighbor across the street from me. Her son's over there for the 3rd time, and it's rough," Taylor said.

And so, on Memorial Day, people pulled together to remember that freedom isn't necessarily free.
