A midday accident kills a driver on the Aiken-Augusta highway.
The accident happened just before 11:00, directly in front of the entrance to the Midland Valley Country Club golf course in Graniteville.
The accident tied up traffic in both directions for a short time, and completely shut down northbound traffic for hours.
Witnesses told us a southbound pickup truck pulling a trailer crossed the median and hit a northbound Honda Civic head on.
The driver of the Honda was killed; the truck driver taken to the hospital.
Gary Schaffer was driving to Aiken and was one of the first people on the scene of the accident.
"I proceeded to go to the car where man was hit, hoping he was alive, try to get him out, save his life, help him out but he was already dead," Schaffer says. "The guy in the truck was already out of the truck, bruised up, cut up pretty bad."
It took about three hours to clean up the accident and get traffic moving again in the northbound lanes of the Aiken-Augusta Highway. Traffic was diverted onto Highway 421 while crews cleaned up the wreck.
