ATLANTA (AP) -- State authorities have declared a state of
emergency in seven counties hit hard by the remnants of Tropical
Storm Fay.

The emergency declaration covers Baker, Charlton, Grady, Miller,
Thomas, Decatur and Seminole counties.

Gov. Sonny Perdue said the emergency declaration would allow the
state to send in equipment and emergency responders to "handle
extensive repairs."

A team from the National Weather Service surveyed damage in
northeast Georgia on Wednesday and determined that five tornadoes
touched down Tuesday.

The Weather Service says the tornadoes damaged two schools in
Hall County. Scores of trees were knocked down, and numerous roofs
were damaged in Hall and Jackson counties. Several mobile homes
were destroyed by winds and falling trees.
