WASHINGTON (AP) -- New regulations proposed under the Americans
with Disabilities Act have both business groups and the disabled
worried.
The business groups are concerned about a possible new round of
lawsuits, plus the expense of making changes to facilities. The tab
for the changes is expected to total 23 billion dollars over 40
years.
Groups representing the disabled say some of the 1,000 pages of
regulation are fuzzy. They also say the proposed changes don't go
far enough.
The new regulations would apply to new businesses and
facilities, and to alterations of existing ones. They would affect
everything from courthouses to drinking fountains to amusement park
rides, bowling lanes, and miniature golf courses.
At miniature golf courses, 50 percent of the holes would have to
be accessible for players in wheelchairs.
