Gun fired at Tom Lehman's car

Tom Lehman has been on the PGA circuit for twenty years. While he's no stranger to Augusta, this kind of thing has never happened to him here before.

Lehman was on Bobby Jones Expressway, heading to the airport Tuesday night when his Escalade was hit by a bullet.

It could have been a career-ender...the bullet from a 9-millimeter handgun striking just inches from Lehman.

And if it hadn't been for two teenagers, the gunman may not have been caught.

It's not the kind of hole in one he's used to.

"A weapon was fired and his vehicle was struck," says Maj. Ken Autry, PIO of the Richmond County Sheriff's Department.

That vehicle - a 2006 Escalade with exclusive PGA tags - is now in evidence at the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

Tom Lehman was interviewed at the airport, where he was heading when the shot was fired. According to the incident report, he told officials he was the only one in the car and was unharmed.

"We did retrieve a projectile from that vehicle," Maj. Autry says.

Officials have arrested 26-year-old Troy Smith, who they say was highly intoxicated and randomly targeting vehicles with a 9-millimeter handgun.

The car of teenagers Clayton Steves and Gary Law was also shot at.

"I don't know what to think," says Law, who was driving. "If he had hit us I wouldn't know what to do."

Steves knew to call 911, and he ultimately led police to Smith's home.

"We got his license plate number and that's how we got him," Steves says.

Smith has since been charged with aggravated assault, carrying a concealed weapon and with reckless conduct.

"I'm glad that we got him where he needs to be," Steves says.

Meanwhile, Lehman is where he needs to be.

Having washed his hands of the incident, he's back on course to play the biggest tournament in golf.

This all happened Tuesday night between the hours of 10 and 11 o'clock.

The first shots were fired on Bobby Jones Expressway; the second, third and fourth, on Wrightsboro Road.

Fortunately no one was hurt.
