Crime doesn't pay...but the inmates will.

South Carolina's Senate Corrections Committee has approved a bill requiring prisoners to pay a $30 booking fee to county and municipal jails.

Money collected from the fee will be funneled through the county and used to offset the cost of detention center operations.

The bill was amended to exclude people incarcerated for detox or mental health reasons.

It also exempts indigents.

The fees cannot be collected when people are released.
