Efforts to add a base to the James Brown statue in downtown Augusta have now fallen into the hands of two local music producers.

The statue was unveiled last year.

Many thought it was too low.

Last week, commissioners approved raising the statue for better visibility, but they are leaving it up to Augusta residents to come up with the money.

It's hard to spot the statue of entertainer James Brown when passing by on Broad Street.

"What we are looking at is put maybe 18-20 inch stage area with some lights around it to make it look like a stage," says Commissioner Marion Williams.

Commissioners voted to raise the statue, but say they don't have the money to make it happen.

That's where local music producers Nelson Curry and Sam Bussey come in.

"The city did not have the funds to make it happen, so as a producer myself and a fan of Mr. Brown I took it upon myself," says Bussey.

Bussey and Curry have already started fundraising with a $5,000 check.

"That's what we want to present to the commission on Tuesday is the funding to get it going and get it started," says Curry.

The statue will be elevated on a stage with lights, at an estimated cost of $17,000.

Williams says perhaps selling bricks with contributors' names will help raise money. Those bricks could be placed around the statue.

"We can put James Brown and the person's name on it and the year and the date," Williams says.

A community effort to raise James Brown to greater heights.

"Anybody can write a check, but we're getting the community involved in the statue raising because we initially wanted to call it 'Lend a Hand and Raise a Man'," says Bussey.

When the statue is elevated, people who visit will still be able to get up close to the statue and take pictures.
