Preparing students for the CRCT

Every Richmond County elementary and middle school student must take it: the Criterion Referenced Competency Test, or CRCT.

It determines if the student will be promoted to the next grade.

But preparing for the test may not be so easy for a child without the right tools.

These students spend their Saturdays in this computer lab at Hornsby Elementary.

They are getting extra practice on skills that most likely will pop up on the CRCT test.

For 3rd, 5th, and 8th graders, it's a test they must pass in order to go to the next grade.

Richmond County Board of Education Title One Director Geneva Stallings says Title One funds help provide materials for extra practice.

"A portion of that time is devoted to practice on activities that would be similar to those seen on CRCT," says Stallings.

It can be a real challenge to practice activities at home if students don't have a computer, but Richmond County says in addition to Saturday School, they also have computers to loan.

"Let's say a parent doesn't have a computer at home, we have in this department and it's been going on for about 20 years we have what is known as the Parent Take Home Computer Program," Stallings says.

The school board has about 100 laptop computers a parent can sign out for 6 weeks.

It's extra practice a student can get at home even if they don’t have a computer.

"If the children wanted additional practice on an activity began earlier that day then they have their own code and they can punch that in practice on some of the same stuff earlier that day," Stallings says.

Title One is making sure that no child is left behind.

"It is our job to support the efforts of the school system and its efforts to help all children to reach their potential," says Stallings.
