A morning fire guts a popular Washington Road restaurant.

Firefighters don't know how this fire started yet.

But around 8:00 this morning they arrived on the scene at Kurama Japanese Seafood & Steak in Washington Place and spent hours putting out all the fire.

Inside Kurama, flames spread quickly, gutting most of the building.

“Kurama’s has heavy fire and smoke damage,” says Ivan Bolgla of the fire department. “They’ll be out of commission for a while.”

Firefighters estimate damage at more than $100,000.

Next door to Kurama is a business that hasn't opened yet: The Country Club.

A supervisor there may have stopped the fire from spreading to their building.

“He thought he heard some popping from next door and then also one of his employees came in and said that he smelled smoke, so they were the ones who called 911,” says Dakota West of The Country Club.

Other than a bad smell, The Country Club isn't damaged.

“We’re staying right on track and we will be open in the next few weeks,” West says.

“I feel sad because Kurama’s been there many years,” says Ti Gorssk, who runs a salon and Internet cafe up the strip mall. “I turned down about five of my customers for haircuts today. They say they're going to call me tomorrow.”

She says 15 of her computers won't turn on, but thinks they can be fixed.

Even though the salon is okay, signs of a morning fire are still here burned insulation is everywhere.

“My main concern that nobody was hurt, getting the situation under control, but once that's been taken care of, then it's back to normal,” says Nathan Shields, the first customer of the day.

And except for Kurama, businesses here are up and running again.

But it may be some time before the sushi and steakhouse reopens.
