Fire in Graniteville destroys house, damages another

There was a disastrous fire Wednesday on Silver Fox Way just outside the North Augusta city limits in the Graniteville fire district. And the windy day may have helped spread the flames.

The area is near Old Sudlow Lake Road. Firefighters say it all started in the grass at a neighbor’s house and then spread next door. The family is still going through what's left of their belongings.

The 911 call came in at 1:48 pm. And 5549 Silver Fox was completely up in flames minutes later. Neighbor Jason Brooks smelled smoke through his open window.

"I thought it was trash burning, then we had a knock on the door and they said it was on fire."

The man at the door was the one who first noticed the tiny flame when it started in the yard. He called 911.

"It went up so quick and in less than five minutes it was in the house," says Brooks.

The family of four is okay. The father was home when it all started and the wife and two kids drove up shortly after.

"It’s just very unfortunate the fire started in this neighborhood and the family lost everything. We thank god no one was hurt," said fire chief Phil Napier.

Brandee Anderson first saw her neighbor’s house after the damage had been done.

"It’s a tragic thing and I hate that I had to go through it but being the type of neighbors we are, we'll come together."

That's compassion that Jason Brooks shares.

"Hopefully everyone can get together and help the family out. We'll do what we can."

The flames eventually died out. But the investigation into what caused the spark continued.

An investigator told News 12 that the spark from a "carelessly discarded smoking item."

The combination of dry grass and pine straw plus high winds caused the fire to spread so quickly.

The family who lost their home went through another fire ten years ago.
