A stakeout results in two arrests, and now police think they may have solved a few recent armed robberies. With pictures you’ll see only on 12, we’ll show you how deputies admit they needed a little bit of luck to pull this one off.

Another robbery, another stakeout. But this time the two merged to end in arrests, as deputies caught two people in the act of robbing this Papa John’s Pizza store.

“Based on the influx of robberies that we have been having in the Augusta area, we have been setting up some aggressive patrols, some stakeouts in certain areas based on the location of the robberies,” said Sgt. Richard Roundtree.

And so recently they’ve beefed up patrols on Walton Way, near the hospital complex. And they went into action around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night. That’s when officers saw two people they deemed suspicious.

“At that point, surveillance was maintained on those subjects to see if they were up to some type of criminal activity. They were observed by officers actually displaying the weapons, a robbery in progress,” Roundtree said.

Deputies let the two, including at least one minor, leave the store, where they were arrested almost immediately.

“We’re sending this message out to the public and criminals. We have aggressively stepped up our patrol to decrease the number of armed robberies in the city,” Roundtree said.

Sgt. Roundtree admits they were extremely lucky, just when luck for the robbers ran out.

Sgt. Roundtree also says that they are looking into whether the two arrested last night are connected to other recent robberies in the area. They did not release their names because they are minors.
