The beam that has rubbed against many tall trucks under the Olive Road railroad bridge turns deadly. A car is crushed and its driver is killed.

“They had an officer on the way. I said no I don’t think you understand the severity, you need to have an ambulance and people to rescue the people in the car,” said Kristy Youngblood.

Kristy Youngblood called 911 after the accident. Officers say a U-Haul driving south went under the bridge. The impact shook the beam loose.

“One of the beams hit the U-Haul, fell from the U-Haul and then fell and hit the car that was traveling north bound,” said Robbie Brown, sheriff’s officer.

Inside the car was a black man in his 20’s. The victim did not have an ID and the coroner is still working to identify him. To get the victim out, rescue workers left the beam. They peel away the windshield and finally use the jaws of life.

The sheriff’s office has charged the U-Haul driver with vehicular homicide and failure to obey traffic signals.

Kristy consoled her after the crash.

“She was just screaming she was sorry,” Kristy said.

But officers say drivers are clearly warned of the bridge’s danger.

“If people just pay attention to the warning signs they could avoid a lot of accidents,” Brown said.

And not paying attention cost an innocent driver his life.

We should mention that this part of Olive Road right under the railroad bridge will be closed for the next two weeks to replace the beam.
