If you’ve been to Augusta Regional Airport lately, you’ve noticed construction. Well, one part is nearing an end, but the work will continue into phase two. News 12 has an exclusive look at the progress.

About 130 workers a day are working on the new gate area, that’s where you get on and off the plane. And it’s on track to completion.

Construction is at a feverish pace at Augusta Regional. Truckloads of concrete are forming the thick layer of runway needed outside the new gate area.

“The nice thing will be is that now TSA will be inside the gate room. So people won’t have to be standing outside to get their passenger screening taken care of,” said Diane Johnston, Augusta Regional Airport.

“It’s one of our finishes we go going and we got a lot of work to go,” said Matthew McCoy, construction manager.

Inside, room for six gate ramps once it’s finished in just six weeks.

“March 17 will be our completion date, then the move and going live from this facility is March 19, which is a Sunday morning,” McCoy said. “We’ve got our wall finishes here, our floor finishes that’ll be done. We got a lot of our bathroom finishes that are well on the way.”

Once the switch is made, work will shift to the current gate rooms. They will become temporary facilities for ticketing and baggage claim. That should be set by July.

“At that point in time the terminal will be totally cleared out and we’ll go ahead and start demolishing on the old terminal. Once we’ve demolished it we’ll put the new terminal up in the same footprint as the old terminal is,” Johnston said.

So the bottom line, in just about six weeks, you’ll be walking into a new area to get on your plane at Augusta Regional. And you won’t have to wait outside in the cold or hot weather to go through TSA security.

The total cost of the project is about $30 million and all the construction should be complete by late 2007.
