A new sheriff’s department substation could be just the ticket to cut down on crime in East Augusta. Commissioners approved the $30,000 for the station slated for the 1600 block of Old Savannah Road. News 12 is on your side with how this will benefit the Bethlehem area.

The boys in blue are moving in and Josephine Brown doesn’t mind a bit.

“Well I think it’ll be, I think it’ll be very nice,” Brown said.

Soon, Miss Brown will live right across the street from Richmond County’s second new substation this year. She’s lived on Old Savannah Road for two decades and says neighborhood crime is on the rise.

“They be walking the street all the time at night and knocking on people’s door and stuff but you know, I think it’d be nice,” Brown said.

So after commissioners approved $30,000 for the station to be built here next to Green Grove Baptist Church, officials will prepare by assigning schedules. Major Richard Weaver says four deputies will take turns rotating in and out of the new office.

“It’s a beat and every shift that’s working will go in and utilize that substation,” Weaver said.

“It don’t bother me one bit with the police station there. I’d love for them to be here in the neighborhood. That’ll protect us, you know?” said Johnny Harden, resident.

And according to crime statistics, some added safety wouldn’t hurt these streets. Since last May nearly 500 reports of suspicious activity, drug use, robberies and assaults.

“Yeah, I see what goes on,” Harden said.

“Marijuana, cocaine, possession, arrests, those kinds of things. It’s pretty typical,” Weaver said.

But for Miss Brown, what might be typical isn’t in her eyes tolerable.

“But I’ll be glad when they get it over there,” Brown said.

“The people, they love it. And everybody wants a substation right next door,” Weaver said.
