Two Greenbrier students arrested on multiple sex charges are scheduled to head back to court on Wednesday. That’s where Reginald Rice and Shaddrick Harris will enter their pleas. News 12 talked to their neighbors about their feelings on the charges.
It was a huge shock for Francis Hill. She’s lived next door to Shaddrick Harris’ family for more than thirty years. She was his babysitter.
“Yeah it was shocking, I couldn’t believe they had Shad in it, the way he be here at home,” Hill said.
Shad’s basketball goal sits idle, but she says he plays basketball a lot at his home in Appling. One of his teammates is Greenbrier student Evan Stephenson.
“We got a basketball goal, he comes over every now and then, and we’ll play some ball,” Stephenson said.
Evan lives several doors down from Reggie Rice in Grovetown, and the charges are a big surprise to him.
They were each indicted on three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Shaddrick Harris is charged with three counts of child molestation. Reggie Rice is charged with two, and also one count of rape. All of it relating to a party after a football game.
They were brought to the maximum-security section of the Columbia County Detention Center, and they were released on bond several days later.
“If they enter a not guilty plea, the next step is trial, and the date will be set,” said Captain Steve Morris.
The district attorney’s office expects to hear not guilty pleas when Judge Duncan Wheale formally reads the charges. Then, it’s on to trial.
“It could take weeks, probably months,” Morris said.
Meanwhile, their neighbors aren’t sure what to think about the charges.
“He’s always been one of my good buddies I could talk to, hang out with,” Stephenson said.
“We don’t have no trouble out of them, and they don’t have no trouble out of us,” Hill said.
All they can do now is wait for the final verdict in a trial that’s put on a spotlight on teenagers and sex. The district attorney says the trial will likely be in March if they enter a not guilty plea.
