Holiday Travel Accidents

Sunday is one of the busiest and deadliest traveling days of the year as many return home from the holiday weekend and head back to work. Both Georgia and South Carolina state troopers have stepped up patrols to prevent more roadside fatalities.

About 30 million Americans are hitting the roads this weekend and eight million of those are from the southeast alone. Which is why state troopers in both South Carolina and Georgia are stepping up their patrol.

“Out in increased numbers trying to slow down traffic and do DUI enforcement,” said Trooper Lamkin.

Despite their efforts, the state of Georgia has already had 14 deaths this weekend while South Carolina has had seven. So what’s the common killer behind the fatalities?

“A lot of speeders and people not wearing seatbelts,” Trooper Lamkin said.

All reasons we’ve heard before, but to Joy Batchelor, mother of three, it’s advice motorists need to hear as often as they can.

“This is Ashton’s room, I keep it set up just the way he had it before he died,” said Batchelor said.

More than three years have passed since all three of her sons were tragically killed in a car accident less than a mile away from her home.

“It’s hard to come in here a lot of times,” Batchelor said.

None of them were wearing their seatbelts.

“I can’t say if my boys had their seatbelts on they’d be with me today, but I have a strong belief they would’ve,” Batchelor said.

Georgia State Trooper Amelio Lamkin has already issued 20 tickets in less than three hours, hoping to prevent another parent from losing a child.

“Kids not being buckled in, letting them ride around in the car,” Lamkin said.

Combine that with holiday festivities and you’ve got one of the deadliest times of the year for state troopers.

“People drink a little more on the holidays,” Lamkin said.

Hoping motorists will remember to buckle up so they won’t have to spend the holidays alone.
