Former Augusta mayoral candidate Tommy Boyles announced he’d throw his support to one of the men who knocked him out of the race. News 12 is on your side to explain what Boyles will do to help Deke Copenhaver win the runoff.

“Ladies and gentlemen, Augusta’s government is broken and it’s failing. It’s failing because of a lack of political stability,” Tommy Boyles said.

Though you won’t see Tommy Boyles’ name on the ballot for the mayoral runoff, he says you will see him out campaigning. This time it won’t be for himself, but for his former opponent Deke Copenhaver.

“We unite and elect Deke Copenhaver to fill the unexpired term of Bob Young. Deke, I give you my full endorsement,” Boyles said.

In front of a crowd of about 40 Copenhaver supporters, the former commissioner turned mayoral candidate announced he’d be switching gears, vowing to be a driving force in Copenhaver’s campaign.

“I want you to understand that when I endorse you, that also means I am working for you,” Boyles said.

“For somebody with thirty years of service to this community to endorse me, that means the world to me and Tommy and I were both running on a platform of change,” Copenhaver said.

Many speculated that Boyles would surely lend his support to the other candidate, Willie Mays, after the two worked on the commission together and after a 30-year friendship. But Boyles says Copenhaver’s fresh approach to government is what sealed his endorsement.

“The reason I got into it was because I wanted change on the commission, too, and I now think let’s just turn it over to the young people, let them change it,” Boyles said.

And as Willie Mays told News 12, he would have appreciated Boyle’s support, but he says it just means he will have to campaign a little harder.

“That’s his right to endorse the candidate of his choice, and it will not stop us from going after the supporters of Ms. Adams and Mr. Boyles,” Mays said.
